Student Identity Verification Policy
Policy on Verifying Student Identity:
In compliance with the United States Federal Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008, Public Law 110-315, American University of Leadership Marbella (AULM) has established and will periodically evaluate its process for verifying the identity of distance learning students. This process confirms that the person who has been admitted to the university is the same student who participates in, completes, and receives credit for the course. AULM will use one or more of the following methods to authenticate student identities:
- Secure login with a username and password
- Proctored exams
- New or emerging technologies and practices that are effective in verifying student identification
All methods of verifying student identity must protect the privacy of student information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), any other applicable laws or regulations regarding the confidentiality of personally identifiable information, and the College’s Privacy Policy. Personally identifiable information collected by the university may be used as the basis for identity verification, including a student ID number, driver’s license or passport, birth certificate, or other information.
Identity Verification Process:
Each student at AULM is assigned a unique username and password to log into the university’s learning management system (currently Claroline eCampus). Students are responsible for providing their complete and accurate identity information in any identification verification process. All users of university systems are responsible for maintaining the security of their usernames, passwords, and other access credentials as required. Users are prohibited from attempting to discover another user’s password or unauthorized access to another person’s files or mail. Users are responsible for any and all activity on their accounts.
Faculty Responsibility:
Faculty members teaching courses through distance education methods are responsible for ensuring that students comply with the university’s identity verification policy. As technology and personal accountability are not absolute in determining a student’s identity, faculty members are encouraged to design courses that use assignments and evaluations that support academic integrity.
Identity Verification for Exam Takers:
Students taking proctored exams will be authenticated at the time of the exam at the testing center (any campus holding an MOU with AULM) or via synchronous video call. One valid form of identification with a photo is required to pass the exam. If the first ID is questioned by the test administrator, a second valid photo ID will be required.
